What is Write From Camp?
We've got all the explanations (as long you love summer camp)
Write From Camp is the behind-the-scenes look at how modern summer camps think, write, market, and operate. All delivered 3x per week.
In many ways, this like reading our camp’s Slack channel of plans, projects, and ideas. Plus, our (Jack & Doug’s) weekly conversations, emails, and text messages about camp.
We are thinking about camp 25/8/366 (yes, you read that right).
Who Is Write From Camp For?
If you nod your head to any of these, then this is for you.
Camp Directors who want to connect with families and stop sounding like every other camp brochure (which mostly sound the same).
Camp Marketing Folks who want to go beyond “making memories” or the “magic of camp” copy and want to learn how to write with a ‘lil personality.
Camp Pros want to come along for the ride of decisions, experiments, wins, and the “well, that didn’t work” moments.
Anyone Building Camp Culture who knows camp (and summer) matters.
Here at Write From Camp, we’re showing you what we’re actually doing at camp each and every week, all year long. Why we’re doing it, and how you can adapt it for your camp.
Who Are We?
Write From Camp is written by Jack Schott & Doug Norrie.
Jack Schott is the Camp Director at Camps Kenwood & Evergreen in New Hampshire. He’s spent 20+ years in the camp world, thinks about camp constantly (probably too much), and believes camp directors are child development experts who just need to start writing like it.
Doug Norrie is a writer, systems builder, and the guy who turns camp conversations into actual content. He’s positive (like 100% positive) every camp has a story worth telling. They just need help getting it out of their heads.
Together, we run:
The Summer Camp Society: Weekly newsletters, resources, and community for camp professionals
Write For Camp: A 6-week cohort teaching camp directors how to write newsletters that connect with families
Camp consulting work: Helping camps figure out their messaging, marketing, and family communication
Summer matters. Plain and simple. We believe camp is one of the most important places in a kid’s life. Camps just need to explain why.
Our Promise To You
As a Write From Camp reader, we promise:
We will never miss a week: You can count on Monday, Wednesday, Friday posts. Every week. All year. No exceptions. We’re building trust through consistency.
We will never make up fake examples: Everything we share is happening at real camps (usually K&E). No “Sarah Smith from Camp XYZ” nonsense. Just real stories, real results, real struggles.
We will give you things you can actually use: Every post includes something you can do, try, adapt, or think about. Not just theory. Stuff (yes, stuff is a pro camp term) you can text to a parent, paste into your website, or test this week.
We will keep getting better at this: We’re figuring this out as we go, just like you. When we learn something new about camp marketing, communication, or operations, you’ll be the first to know.
As a subscriber, you can check for new Write From Camp posts here on Substack. Or, sit back and wait for them to hit your inbox 3x per week.
You got this,
Jack & Doug
